How to use vernier calipers?

Vernier caliper introduction

Vernier caliper is a commonly used gauge with a simple structure, easy to use, medium accuracy and large range of measured dimensions, etc. It can be used to measure the outer diameter, inner diameter, length, width, thickness, depth and hole distance of parts, etc., with a wide range of applications

Structure composition

Vernier caliper is composed of the main ruler and sub ruler (also called vernier). The main ruler and the fixed foot are made into one; the vice ruler and the movable foot are made into one and can slide on the main ruler. Vernier caliper has 0.02mm, 0.05mm, 0.1mm three kinds of measuring accuracy.

According to the use can be divided into.

Single-sided calipers, double-sided calipers, triple-use calipers (commonly used), etc.

(1). Single-sided calipers with inside and outside measuring jaws, can measure the inside dimension and outside dimension.

(2). Double-sided calipers with upper measuring jaws for knife-shaped outer measuring jaws and lower measuring jaws for inner and outer measuring jaws, which can measure inner and outer dimensions.

(3). The inner measuring jaws of triple-use calipers with knife-shaped, used to measure the inner dimensions; the outer measuring jaws with the flat and knife-shaped measuring surface, used to measure the outer dimensions; the back of the ruler body with a depth gauge, used to measure the depth and height

The use of vernier calipers

When using vernier calipers to measure the size of parts, the following points must be noted.

1. measurement before the caliper should be wipe clean, check the caliper of the two measuring surface and measuring edge is straight without damage, the two measuring claws closely fit, there should be no obvious gap, while the vernier and the main ruler of the zero line to align with each other. This process is called proofreading vernier caliper zero position.

2. When moving the ruler frame, the activity should be free, should not be too loose or too tight, not to mention the phenomenon of shaking. When fixing the ruler frame with fixing screws, the reading of the caliper should not be changed. When moving the ruler frame, do not forget to loosen the set screw, and should not be too loose so as not to fall.

3. When measuring the external dimensions of the parts: the caliper two measuring surfaces of the line should be perpendicular to the measured surface, can not be skewed. Measurement, you can gently shake the caliper, but the vertical position, first the caliper of the active jaws open, so that the number of jaws can be freely into the work piece, the parts against the fixed jaws, and then move the ruler frame, with a slight pressure to make the active jaws contact parts. Such as calipers with the micro-actions devices, this time can tighten the micro-action device on the set screw, and then turn the adjustment nut, so that the jaws contact the parts and read the size. Never adjust the calipers of the two jaws to close to or even less than the measured size, the calipers mandatory card to the parts up. Doing so will make the measuring jaws deformation, or make the measuring surface premature wear so that the calipers lose the proper accuracy.

4. With vernier caliper measuring parts, do not allow excessive pressure, the pressure used should make the two measuring jaws just contact the surface of the parts. If the measurement pressure is too large, not only will make the measuring claw bend or wear, and the amount of claw under pressure to produce elastic deformation, so that the measured size is not accurate (external size is smaller than the actual size, internal size is larger than the actual size).

5. In the vernier caliper reading, the caliper should be held horizontally, towards the direction of the bright light, so that the human line of sight is as far as possible and the caliper surface is perpendicular to the inscribed line, so as to avoid the skewed line of sight caused by the reading error.

6. In order to obtain the correct measurement results, you can measure more than once. That is, in the same section of the part in different directions for measurement. For longer parts, it should be measured in all parts of the full length, so as to obtain a more correct measurement result.
